At Valley, we are always looking for ways to support our customers and members but finding opportunities to collaborate on a recipe or formula that is just icing on the cake – or in this case the hops in the whirlpool.
Back in 2024 (sooooo long ago) Ryan, the head brewer at Badger State Brewing Company, and John Luke Parlow, Business Development Manager – Fermentation here at Valley, were shooting the breeze when John Luke brought up a long-time dream of his to collab with a local Wisconsin craft brewery on a Coconut Hazy IPA. Both being lovers of coconut the dream was an easy sell. As it turned out Ryan had even done a similar brew before at a previous brewery in New Mexico.
The dream began to turn into a plan as they discussed the recipe and the type of hops they wanted to use. Thanks to Ryan’s previous experience he knew he was going to add the coconut (toasted sweetened) in post-fermentation after the last dry hop. Doing so would leave the oils which give the beer a richer feel on your tongue. They ended up settling on Dynaboost Citra (fancy flowable hop product) and Cryo Sabro Hops believing the classic pineapple and orange of Citra would marry perfectly with the tropical fruit and coconut notes that Sabro is famous for. Together these would blend beautifully on their base of Prairie Special Pale Malt with White Wheat, Flaked Oats, Spitz and Flaked White Wheat giving the hazy IPA an even softer mouth feel.
Months of planning, fermentation, initial pre-carbonated tasting, and then back to finishing the brew with one more session of dry hopping and adding in the coconut and the dream of a coconut Hazy IPA has been born!
